Mental Health Counseling Internship

Growth and Transitions Counseling has been hosting and training the next cohort of clinicians since 2016. We have hosted students from Long Island University, Brooklyn College, Alfred University, Capella University, New York University, Nyack College, and others. Our interns have moved on to earning their 3000 supervised hours with the practice and we have successfully seen over 10 clinicians complete their full licensure and become LMHC.

Here is what our interns are saying!

"I have worked at Growth and Transitions Counseling to earn both my 600 internship hours and my 3000 hours needed for certification. My experience in this practice has been so rewarding. One of the best parts is the diverse clientele as I get to work with clients of many different ethnic backgrounds, socio-economic status' and mental health concerns. These experiences, along with having Adiasha's guidance, have enabled me to grow so much as a practitioner and explore my own personal preferences, strengths and areas in need of improvement. Adiasha is flexible and supportive as a supervisor and is always available when I have a question or need another perspective about a case. I am very happy to have found this practice as it was a great place to have started my professional journey." Jennifer (2019)

“I am a recent graduate of New York University and began my initial internship at Growth and Transitions Counseling in June of 2020. I had such a positive experience with the practice that upon graduating, I have continued pursuing my 3000 supervised hours with Adiasha as my supervisor. I feel it was a unique experience to have the opportunity to stay with my first clients for this duration. It has also allowed me to mature as a therapist as I experience behavioral change with my clients. Adiasha encourages independent thinking and analysis, but is always available for consultation and support. Another aspect that I have valued is learning more about the business side of private practice. Adiasha is always open to answering questions about insurance policies and other nuances of running the business, including important steps for a clinician to take while pursuing licensure.” Elisa (2020)

"I have been lucky enough to work at Growth and Transitions to earn my practicum, internship, and now my limited permit hours after graduation. It is amazing to work at a practice that accepts insurance and gives me the opportunity to work with a diverse range of clients and gain so much valuable experience. Adiasha is a wonderful supervisor who strikes the perfect balance between offering guidance, teaching and modeling important therapeutic skills and interventions, and trusting her clinicians. I feel supported without ever feeling micromanaged. I feel so grateful to be at  Growth and Transitions and am excited about my future working here.” Lila (2023)

“Being a part of Growth and Transitions Counseling has been the most integral and rewarding facet of my road to licensure. The practice's structure is beautifully and professionally designed, allowing me to spend the majority of my time working to really focus on developing my skills as a mental health practitioner and directly serving my clients. I am very grateful to be working with Adiasha Richards-Thornhill, the practice director and supervisor. As an intern, it is very important for me to feel supported by the team I work with and both my colleagues and supervisor have been supportive, welcoming, and informative. Adiasha really focuses on providing interns with tools and materials they can use in their sessions with clients in addition to endless resources to improve and learn as a therapist. I have greatly appreciated the practice's dynamic culture and orientation; drawing upon mental health literature, culture, spirituality, and consideration of the current world climate to offer comprehensive service to our clients. In the practice, interns and limited practicioners are treated as fully functioning, independent practitioners who are held to a high standard of ethics, responsibility and accountability. We also ACTUALLY have fun! “ Dorinda (2020)
